The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPC) is accepting intern applications for the FALL 2025 semester. Recruitment is open from now until Sunday, July 13 at 11:59 p.m.
The EPC is a local government agency established to protect the environment and natural resources of Hillsborough County. EPC hosts unpaid internships for multiple programs that fall under our Administration, Air, Waste, Water, and Wetlands Divisions. Students may participate in a variety of environmental opportunities, including field, monitoring, or restoration work, under the mentorship of our skilled environmental scientists and professionals. Internship Descriptions
Community Outreach
Interns will support the Outreach Coordinator in planning and carrying out outreach events, as well as assisting with social media and marketing-related tasks. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends is preferred. Familiarity with Adobe products and other graphic design software is helpful.
Software Developer Intern
Interns will support the development of web applications. Responsibilities can include contributing to front-end interface design, building web APIs, database design, and creating technical documentation. Interns will gain hands-on experience with the software development lifecycle and collaboration tools such as Azure DevOps.
Waste Division
Interns will spend time with staff from the four departments within the Waste Division such as Petroleum Cleanup, Solid and Hazardous Waste, Small Quantity Generators, and Storage Tank Compliance. Interns will learn about the responsibilities each department is charged with, including overseeing the cleanup of petroleum sites, petroleum storage tanks compliance, interacting with businesses in providing compliance assistance in management of hazardous waste, the review and evaluation of applications to operate solid waste management facilities, and routine monitoring of old landfills and abandoned dumpsites. Some activities will require accompanying staff in the office and in the field as inspectors perform various types of inspections. Requirements for this position are weekday mornings (ideally 8am-12pm) and availability on Thursdays.
For the Fall 2025 semester, the Waste Intern will also assist in creating a 3D model. Experience or coursework in applied arts, sculpture, or model-making is preferred.
Wetlands Division
Interns will assist staff with permit application reviews, administrative duties, data entry, field investigations, observe Commission meetings, staff meetings, and participation in outreach opportunities. This internship opportunity includes the use of aerials, databases, Google maps, GIS, and Pictometry. You must be willing to work outdoors and in any type of weather. Intern opportunities are available Monday through Friday from 7 am-6 pm. Preferred availability is at least two days per week.
