Associate Skills Coach – Hockey (Event-Based, Part-Time)

This role is ideal for college-aged players who want to stay involved in the game, build coaching experience, and earn extra income around classes and summer commitments.

As an Associate Skills Coach, you’ll support our Head/Lead Skills Coaches during youth hockey camps and clinics. You’ll be on the ice helping run drills, demonstrating skills, and working directly with players in a fun, professional environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Head/Lead Skills Coaches with on-ice sessions for youth players (ages typically 8–18).
  • Help set up and run drills for skating, puck skills, shooting, and game situations.
  • Demonstrate skills and techniques at a level appropriate for youth players.
  • Provide encouragement, basic feedback, and positive energy at all times.
  • Help manage player flow, stations, and safety during sessions.
  • Assist with simple logistics (equipment, etc).
  • Represent Apex Hockey professionally with players, parents, rink staff, and other coaches.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Currently playing or recently played competitive hockey (Junior, NCAA, ACHA, Major Junior, AAA, strong high school, etc.).
  • Strong skating and puck skills with the ability to confidently demonstrate core techniques.
  • Comfortable working with kids and communicating clearly on the ice.
  • Reliable transportation to and from your local rink.
  • Willing/able to work select evenings and weekends and during camp weeks (summer, breaks).
  • Positive, coachable attitude and interest in skill development.

Nice-to-have:

  • Any previous experience working with youth (coaching, camps, refereeing, tutoring, etc.).
  • Interest in sports management, coaching, or training as a career path.
  • Coaching certification (USA Hockey / Hockey Canada) is a plus but not required.

Hours & Compensation:

  • Event-based; hours vary by camp/clinic schedule (primarily evenings/weekends and seasonal camp weeks).
  • Competitive hourly or per-event pay, dependent on market and experience (details discussed during interview).
  • This position is structured as an independent contractor role with variable, event-based hours and no guaranteed minimum number of sessions.
