Research and Development Chemist

Job Summary:

The Research & Development Chemist supports the development of new products, enhancement of existing formulations, and testing efforts required for innovation and continuous product improvement. This role also supports Proton Software by providing accurate data, application insights, and testing results that inform internal and external stakeholders.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Senior Chemist and/or Technical Director to improve the functionality, performance, and application of chemical products.
  • Adjust, refine, or optimize existing product formulations based on feedback from sales engineers, field service personnel, and customers.
  • Replicate specific water qualities and system conditions to conduct testing of new and existing products, ensuring accuracy and relevance to real-world applications.
  • Review, perform, and verify quality control parameters to support consistent production standards.
  • Prepare documentation, technical reports, and presentations as required by the Senior Chemist and/or Technical Director.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, test data, and research files in accordance with internal documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with the R&D and QC teams to support product troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and maintain clean, organized, and compliant laboratory workspaces.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and testing equipment.
  • Strong math skills with the ability to perform accurate calculations and interpret test data.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, and comfortable learning new software platforms.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, technical methods, and safety protocols.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing or walking in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move containers or equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent use of hands and fine motor skills to handle chemicals, laboratory instruments, glassware, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE (lab coat, gloves, goggles, respirator if required).
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring visual acuity, including reading measurements, observing reactions, and performing microscopic evaluations.
