Internship: Engineering

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Internship activities may include, but are not limited to, the following proposed projects:
  • Substation Engineering (Physical Controls): Assist engineering staff on medium and high voltage substation projects, which may include project scoping, site visits, substation design, engineering calculations and as-built documents. Additional tasks may include developing standards for substation design and updating construction specifications.
  • Relay & Maintenance Engineering: Participate in relay trip event analysis to identify root cause on transmission, distribution and generation systems. Assist with the development of protection system standards and perform short circuit model updates/verification to ensure accuracy.
  • Distribution Engineering: Assists in standards creation and clean-up for distribution system improvements. These activities may include modeling existing structures for strength and clearance calculations to define standards that meet requirements in accordance with the National Electrical Safety Code. Additional tasks may also include staking, interconnect reviews, and documenting processes and procedures.
  • System Performance: Perform a wide range of analysis with focus on actual system operation and events to ensure the reliability of the electric grid. Work includes ensuring procedures are in place, accurate monitoring is available, and simulated and actual conditions align.
  • Transmission & Distribution Planning: Participate in studies and evaluation of current and future transmission and distribution system needs to develop solutions that support the rapidly-changing ways in which electricity is being produced and consumed, modernize aging infrastructure, and implement new and emerging technology.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Electric Engineering with an expected graduation date between December 2023 to June 2025
  • Candidates may be subject to assessment of skills, job match, or aptitude

DETAILS & DURATION OF INTERNSHIP:
  • This internship will be reporting in person to Duluth, MN
  • This role is expected to run approximately from January 2023 to May 2024
  • The internship will be full time during summer and breaks and part time (20 hours per week) during the school year
  • Hours and duration are subject to change based on company needs
